The focus of the symposium was to review our evolving view of some aspects of human physiology in the 21st century: the new concept of epigenetics modifying gene expression, a recapitulation of how sex is established and maintained in the human genome, a discussion of the emerging biology of variations in human sexuality and finally a discussion of the concept of personalized medicine: the child of the postgenomic era-its promise and its pitfalls. Each of these topics was discussed in detail.
