Our Mission

The Foundation for Gender-Specific Medicine* supports the investigation of the ways in which biological sex and gender affect normal human function and the experience of disease. We aim to use the study of gender to foster the development of new sciences and improve healthcare for all patients.

One of the discipline’s pioneers, Marianne J. Legato, FACP, MD established the Foundation as a continuation of her work with The Partnership for Gender-Specific Medicine at Columbia University.

Projects We Support

Your contributions have made 2019 the most productive year we have ever had and we hope for even more exciting things in the year to come. You can support individual investigators or encourage research that addresses subjects in which you have a special interest. Come to talk with us about what you think might be the best use of your generosity. We depend on you, we want to collaborate with you and we are interested in your views of what is going on in this remarkable new period of biomedical research, already bearing completely unforeseen and stunningly important rewards.

The Research

The Foundation's sponsors scholarship and research in the field of gender-specific medicine. We support thoughtful think tank sessions by leading biomedical investigators, legal experts and ethicists who together consider the implications of what we are doing in this revolutionary phase of human existence. Our latest textbook, the third edition of The Principles of Gender-Specific Medicine, our just-founded journal, Gender and the Genome, and the international symposia we coordinate and participate in are dedicated to reporting the new achievements that are expanding and changing our understanding of what it means to be human. Some of the things they are doing include:

  • Altering genetic structure to prevent or cure disease
  • Creating new forms of life by designing entirely new genomes
  • Developing ever more complex robots to assist and help humans achieve better lives.
  • Equipping men and women to travel in space and eventually equipping them to inhabit other places in the universe.
  • Unraveling the way the experiences of grandparents and parents shape the embryo in the womb to form characteristics that will last that child's lifetime
