Due to a very generous philanthropic grant, we have granted two awards to faculty in the Department of Medicine at Columbia University for research in gender-specific medicine. The awardees are Doctor Jonathan T. Lu, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiology and Dr. Jon T. Giles, Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology.
Dr. Lu will be working on gender-specific stem cell models of a congenital illness (Congenital Long QT Syndrome) that predisposes the patient to cardiac arrhythmias. He will test the impact of sex hormones on the properties of those cells and will make this ground-breaking population of stem cells available to the general scientific community.
Dr. Giles plans to assess gender differences in tissue inflammation in rheumatoid arthritis and cardiovascular disease.. He intends to explore the contribution of adipose tissue inflammation in the pathophysiology of these illnesses.
