We all think of the X chromosome as the arbiter of femininity and only important for women, but Doctor Jacob L. Mueller and his colleagues at the Whitehead Institute in Cambridge, Massachusetts have just reported news about the unappreciated importance of the X for men*. In fact, many of the genes on the X chromosome are expressed only in male germ cells! As yet, the function of these genes is not really understood but it is a promising area for new research. These X genes may well make essential contributions to male development and function.
